Cinema Arts teacher Mark Raines’ passion is to teach, engage, and empower teenagers through visual arts. Raines began his career as a local television reporter and anchor. While volunteering in youth ministry in 2000, he was offered a position to teach television production and work in public relations for a local social district, which led to a career in education, including most recently as the Envision Cinema Coordinator at Canyon Crest Academy in San Diego, before coming to SDSCPA.
Raines was named the state, regional, and national New Career Technical Teacher of the Year in the 2007-2008 school year by the Association for Career and Technical Education, and he has been recognized for teaching excellence from the Radio Shack National Teacher Awards, the Toyota Teacher Program, USAToday, and the SDCOE Innovative Video in Education Awards. Raines has also given two TEDx talks. As an executive producer of high school television and film productions, Raines has seen his students excel at the highest levels in this visual art area, including honors at the California Student Media Festival, the All American High School Film Festival, the White House Student Film Festival, and the National Film Festival for Talented Youth. His students were also the first high school students to create two documentary, environmental short films for IMAX. In 2017, Raines’ student was one of 20 U.S. Presidential Scholars of the Arts and the only student honored for film work.
Raines was born in Monterey, CA, but as the son of a Navy officer, he lived all over the country in various coastal communities, including Florida, Hawaii, Mississippi and Virginia. San Diego has been his hometown since 2008.
